Corbeille de Fruits dans un Panier (Basket of Fruit) – Caravaggio, c. 1599
Deceptively simple and endlessly fascinating, Caravaggio's Basket of Fruit is one of the most revolutionary paintings in the history of Western art. A wicker basket sits at the edge of a ledge, overflowing with figs, grapes, apples, and peaches — some ripe and luminous, others already withering, leaves curling and spotted with decay. There are no figures, no mythology, no grand narrative. Just fruit, light, and shadow. And yet the painting commands the eye with absolute authority.
Painted around 1599, this is widely considered one of the earliest pure still lifes in European painting — a genre Caravaggio helped invent. The deliberate inclusion of imperfect, decaying fruit is no accident: it is a meditation on the passage of time, the fragility of beauty, and the inevitability of decay — themes that run through all of Caravaggio's work. Cardinal Federico Borromeo, who commissioned the piece, considered it equal in value to any Flemish landscape in his collection.
