One of his early portraits of one of his friends, painted two years before meeting George Dyer. Bacon's earlier relationships had been with older and tumultuous men. One of them was Peter Lacy, the great love of Francis Bacon's life. A former fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain, they pursued a tempestuous relationship until Lacy's death in 1962.
