Jules Mary (March 20, 1851 – July 27, 1922) was a French novelist. His melodramas were traditionally popular subjects for adaptation by filmmakers, and his best-known work Roger la Honte and "La Fille Sauvage" has been made into films five times.
Jacqueline, la femme de l'ingénieur Gervoise, a été abandonnée par son amant, Villedieu. La petite Liliane qui lui est née, passe pour avoir été recueillie par le couple.
Les Gervoise s'expatrient aux USA, grâce a un ami, et y font fortune. De retour en France, Jacqueline se heurte au chantage de Villedieu.
