Van Gogh painted this painting in honor of the son of his brother Theo, Vincent Willem (born 31 January 1890), of which he is patron. To symbolize this new life, Vincent chose to represent the branches of an almond tree, one of the earliest trees in the spring, which in February already, is adorned with flowers to announce the arrival.
To achieve this, Van Gogh was inspired by the Japanese art of engraving. It shows the accuracy of the lines used and the positioning of the shaft in the assembly. The flowers represented today have predominantly white tones as they were originally more roses. They paled under the effect of light and color has unfortunately lost its force. This painting is on display at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
